Major roadworks begin between Fuengirola and Mijas

Work has begun on the A-387 which connects Fuengirola and Mijas Pueblo in a bid to reduce congestion between the two municipalities, and to ease traffic flow onto the A-7 motorway at exit 210.

A provisional repainting of the lanes on the lower stretch of the A-387 and the installation of a roundabout, which allows traffic to head directly into Fuengirola, has already taken place. In additional, Fuengirola is to move the four-lane flyover above the A-7 to connect it directly to La Calerita roundabout. There are also plans to create an entirely new road which connects the expanding area of La Loma with the A-387.

The five million euro-project is being financed thanks to an agreement with a private company, rumoured to be El Corte Inglés.

“The new roundabouts are confusing,” says Mijas Pueblo resident, Elaine Trevitt. “But as I use the road every day, I’ll get used to it. If these works they’re doing now reduce the endless tailbacks every morning and afternoon, it’ll all be worth it.”

Graig Oldman who lives in Fuengirola wonders about the timing of the project: “Why did they start these roadworks in the summer? There’s enough congestion and confusion on the roads at the moment and they make the situation worse.

Debris cleared from two rivers to avoid floods

The Town Hall’s Operational Services department has cleared more than 600 cubic metres, or 40 truck loads of debris from the bed and mouth of the Arroyo Pajares. The gravel and sediment had been accumulating since the prolonged storms earlier this year.

Councillor Ana Mula stressed that this project was important not only in terms of aesthetics but also to reduce the risk of floods in the winter. “Despite this being the responsibility of the Junta, they have not tackled this problem for years, so we had to do something,” she said.

The team has now begun similar work on the Arroyo Real.

Los Pacos health centre has budget allocated

The Town Hall has confirmed that a budget has already been set for the construction of a new health centre in the Los Pacos district.

The announcement comes following rumours, many from within the Town Hall, that the project had been scrapped.

Pueblo López is the latest area to benefit from the municipal project

We’re all looking forward to our little part of Fuengirola getting a makeover,” says Birgitte Olsen from the ‘Pueblo López district.

This town centre urbanisation is the latest area to see the arrival of a 20-strong team of Operation Services workers from the Town Hall, which is refurbished designated neighbourhoods.

The municipal campaign, “The Premiere of Your Neighbourhood” has already attended to eight districts since April.

On her recent visit to Pueblo López, Councillor Ana Mula, said she welcomes the suggestions of the residents. “The team is here to respond to the needs of the community. We launched the campaign to sort out all the little matters like resurfacing the pavements, removing bad signage, refurbishing recycling facilities and tidying-up the public spaces and gardens.”

Olsen believes the campaign will have long-lasting benefits for Fuengirola. “A town which looks good attracts more visitors, more businesses and more investment. The quality of living goes up as a result.”

Fuengirola residents, Simon Davis is less convinced. “I think the time and money would be better spent cutting anti-social behaviour and crime as it’s out of control in some residential areas.”

Beach patrols stepped-up

From 1st July, a 13-strong team of civil protection officers will monitor the town´s beaches with the aim of ensuring security and the compliance of bylaws. They will have direct links with the Local Police who will support their work from quad bikes and patrol cars on the promenade.

Paseo works cancelled by the nacional government

At a recent press conference, the mayor of Fuengirola, Esperanza Oña, launched a campaign about the central government’s “flagrant breach of commitment” in regards to cacenlling the completion of the fourth phase of the Paseo Maritimo in Carvajal.

“Sr. Zapatero, at the head of government, has cancelled the contract without any explanation. We don’t know why the works haven´t been able to be finished ove the last six years,” said Oña, who pointed out that the 2004 agreement stated the Town Hall would reform 25 percent of the Paseo, with the remaining 75% the responsibility of the government.

Inter-Municipality initiative to improve traffic flow

An agreement signed between Fuengirola and Mijas Town Halls, the Junto de Andalucía and El Corte Inglés, means a notorious traffic hot spot on the A-387 is soon to be resolved.

The project, which will cost five million euros to complete, will include the construction of two additional lanes where La Loma connects with Avenida Clemente Díaz, one of the main arteries into Fuengirola; as well as two further roundabouts, one on each side of A-7 motorway.

Juan Cruz, the Councillor for Town Planning confirmed cooperation between the municipalities would ensure minimum disruption. “We will work together on this 19 month project to regulate traffic flow and to establish alternative routes so as to inconvenience drivers as little as possible,” he said.

Wendy Thomas who drives to work in Fuengirola from Mijas Pueblo is sceptical about the proposals. “it’s chaos especially in the morning rush hour. Adding additional lanes won’t help as there are simply too many cars trying to filter on and off the main road,” she says.

“Can you imagine the shambles this will cause for those 19 months whilst they are doing the work?” adds Paul Jackson who lives in Las Lagunas, Mijas Costa.

New road resurfacing campaign launched

This week, the Town Hall has begun a major new road resurfacing project, which aims to improve several key streets in the municipality.

The roads are to be repaired in order of priority, which has been determined by the Local Police. The 208,000 euro initiative will include the streets around Plaza del Concejo; calles Frasculeo, Monaguillo, Bombit; as well as a stretch of Avenida Clemente Díaz.

On her visit to the site this week, the Councillor for Town Planning, Ana Mula, said: “Residents in these areas have been warned beforehand about the works and they’re very happy because it’s something they’ve been demanding.”

Lack of funds temporarily freezes construction

Work has stopped on the Alzheimer’s Centre in Fuengirola due to lack of funds.

The Association of Alzeimer’s Patients Relatives in Fuengirola planned to build one of the most modern centres in Spain on a 900 square metre plot donated by the Fuengirola town hall.

However, it is yet to be equipped, and 700,000 euros of the two million euros which the project was awarded has already been spent.

The centre, which will hold 120 people, was due to be finished by 2012.

Recycled water to irrigate golf courses and parks

The Ministry of the Environment in Madrid has given the go ahead to a 14 kilometre network network of pipes that will harness the flow of water from the treatment plant at Cerro de Águila, so that recycled water can be used to irrigate parks and golf courses in Mijas and Fuengirola.

The new pipes will have the capacity to transport 20,000 cubic metres per day. Los Lagos, Santana, Los Olivos, La Manzanilla and Altavista golf courses as well as public green spaces near Fuengirola’s Sohail Castle, will benefit from the new system. Currently, only Mijas Racecourse and a few nearby courses are able to use the recycled water from the plant.
